Thuja and hedges – Questions and Answers (FAQ)
Are you planning a hedge? Thuja is a popular choice, but it raises a lot of questions. Check the answers to the most common ones.
Which thuja (hedgehogs) grow the fastest?
The fastest growing popular thuja variety for hedges is the Western Ryegrass 'Brabant'. It can achieve an annual growth of up to 30-40 cm. In comparison, the popular 'Smaragd' grows slower (about 20-30 cm per year), but is denser.
How much to plant thuja for a hedge?
The planting density of thuja depends on the variety and the effect we want to achieve. Columnar varieties like 'Smaragd' are planted every 50-80 cm. 'Brabant' varieties, which are wider, are planted every 80-100 cm if you want a looser hedge, or denser (even every 50 cm) for a quick, compact effect.
Why do thuja turn brown from the inside?
Browning thuja from the inside is often a natural physiological process. Light does not reach the inside of the dense crown, so older needles die. This is normal as long as the outer parts of the plant remain green. Regular cleaning of the inside of the bush from dry needles improves air circulation.
