How and when to plant plants? FAQ Guide
Do you have doubts about planting new plants in the garden? Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions, prepared by experts from the Dębscy School.
What is the best time to plant trees and shrubs?
The best times to plant most deciduous trees and shrubs dug from the ground are the leafless period: spring (before leaf development) and autumn (after leaf fall). Plants purchased in pots (containers) can be planted throughout the growing season, from spring to autumn.
How to prepare the soil before planting a plant?
To properly prepare the soil, you need to dig it deep and remove all weeds and stones. The hole should be 2-3 times wider than the root ball. It is worth pouring a layer of fertile soil or compost on the bottom.
Do I need to fertilize plants right after planting?
No, you should usually not fertilize your plants immediately after planting, as this can damage the young roots. It is best to hold off on the first fertilization for a few weeks or until the next season. The exception is the use of a specialized substrate enriched with starter fertilizer.
How deep to plant a plant?
The plant should be planted at the same depth as it grew in the pot or nursery. Planting too deep or too shallow can lead to growth problems or diseases.
