Hydrangeas – care, pruning, fertilizing (FAQ)

Hydrangeas are the queens of the garden, but growing them can be a challenge. We dispel the most common doubts about their care, cutting and fertilizing.

Why is my hydrangea not blooming?

The most common cause of lack of flowering in garden hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) is its freezing or incorrect pruning. Garden hydrangeas bloom on last year's shoots, so if we cut them back in spring (or freeze in winter), the plant will not bloom. Bouquet hydrangeas bloom on this year's shoots and do not have this problem.

How do you turn a hydrangea blue?

In order for a garden hydrangea to turn blue, it needs a very acidic substrate (pH 4.5-5.0) and the presence of aluminum. For this purpose, use specialized fertilizers for blue hydrangeas containing aluminum sulfate and water the plant with acidic water (e.g. rainwater).

When to prune bouquet hydrangeas?

Bouquet hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata) are pruned in early spring, usually in March. We cut them firmly above the 2-3 buds of last year's shoot. Since they bloom on this year's shoots, a strong pruning guarantees strong growth and abundant flowering.
