Plant Diseases and Pests – Recognition (FAQ)

Do your plants look bad? Do they turn yellow, have spots or do you see worms on them? Diagnose the problem with our FAQ guide and learn how to effectively fight diseases and pests.

Why do the leaves of my plants turn yellow?

Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) can have many causes. The most common are: overwatering (roots rot due to lack of oxygen), dryness, nutrient deficiency (especially nitrogen or iron with inappropriate soil pH) or natural aging of older leaves. Check the moisture content of the substrate and adjust fertilization.

What to do for aphids? What are the home remedies?

Aphids can be combated in several ways. Effective home methods include spraying with water with gray soap or garlic extract. In the event of a large infestation, it may be necessary to use ready-made plant protection products (insecticides), e.g. based on castor oil or pyrethrins, which are safer for the environment.

How to recognize and combat fungal diseases (e.g. powdery mildew)?

Fungal diseases most often manifest themselves in the form of spots on the leaves (e.g. black spot of roses) or a white, mealy coating (powdery mildew). Quick action is key: remove and burn infected leaves and apply an appropriate fungicide spray (fungicide). Prevention is also important: avoiding soaking the leaves during watering and taking care of ventilation.

My conifers are turning brown from the bottom. What to do?

The browning of conifers (e.g. thuja) from the bottom and from the trunk side is often the result of physiological drought, especially after winter, or lack of light. It can also be a symptom of magnesium deficiency or a fungal attack (phytophthorosis). You should take care of regular watering (also in autumn before winter) and use a specialized fertilizer for conifers against browning.
